The MorElectric system provides heating, cooling and accessory power, including battery charging, without idling the engine. Cat said trucks using the MarElectric technology will be equipped to accept two idling-reduction options. The first is shore power to reduce idling at truck stops, loading docks or fleet terminals where electric power plug-in facilities are available.The second option will be an onboard auxiliary power unit to provide cab comfort until shore power expands and becomes more widely available, all with an eye on reducing vehicle idling fuel consumption, emissions, and noise. Engine idling is an increasing concern throughout the engine-powered equipment markets. Specifically in the truck market, with accessories dependent on engine speed, low idle off en doesn''t provide adequate air conditioning, 12 Vd.c. electrical power or heat rejection capacity. Trucks use their cruise control to elevate the idle speed which in turn elevates the fuel consumption, emissions and noise issues. Firwin also developed an innovative method of covering the entire 40 ft. long tank of a military tanker truck with a removable, reusable insulation blanket. The tanker truck was designed to maintain water at a comfortable drinking temperature for front line troops under all weather conditions. The cover was primarily aprilia engineered for energy conservation, as the small onboard auxiliary generator set, used to provide power for the heating and refrigeration unit, would otherwise not be able to effectively heat or cool the water. Insulation blankets have generally been considered a somewhat mundane, but necessary part of many engine applications. The concept was simple; part of the engine was hot, the manufacturer didn''t want somebody leaning on it and getting burned, so a blanket was put over the hot spot. An electric water pump allows the cooling system to operate at the flow required to maintain optimum engine temperature and could eliminate engine overcooling that can occur with mechanically driven pumps. If additional flow is required for a specific application, it can be provided via software commands, not necessarily a larger pump. These electrically driven pumps are designed with fully enclosed, electric motors that could eliminate shaft-seal leakage problems, the most common failure mode with today''s mechanically driven water pumps.
