Walking the fire line with a GPS unit is too dangerous, and flying the perimeter in a helicopter equipped with GPS or mapping by hand from the air at a safe distance aren''t often feasible. During the initial stages of a wildland fire, helicopters are usually busy with the more critical task of dropping water.The aprillascooters Los Angeles County Fire Department has found a third alternative. It aprillascooters has equipped bulldozers with built-in GPS units, a scheme that''s proved to be valuable because it takes the guesswork out of where a bulldozer line exists. The GPS receivers in these bulldozers have removable PC Type II cards that can be processed with associated mapping software. However, this bulldozer line typically makes up only a part of the fire line, the rest of which must still be mapped by other means. Operating proceduresAll pressure washers seem intimidating the first time you use them. Have the rental center or tool retailer instruct you on its use, and follow these guidelines:Water supply. Make sure your water supply can deliver the gallons per minute specified for your machine. For example, if your pressure washer needs 2-1/2 gpm, time how long it takes your garden hose to fill a 5-gallon pail. The garden hose must be 50 fi. long or less and have a 3/4-in. inside diameter, with standard 3/4-in. hose fittings for connecting to the washer''s inlet. To ensure that water circulates unobstructed through the system, check the water inlet filter or screen and clean it of debris. Also make sure the garden and pressure hoses are kink free. Before starting the washer, it''s imperative that water be flowing through the washer and out the spray wand. Follow these steps: Filter maintenance problems can occur during winter months when the temperature of the fuel drops below the cloud point and wax starts to be filtered out. This accumulated wax will eventually dissolve when the fuel heats up and may cause some operation problems such as rough running and black smoke. Winter conditions may require switching to #1 diesel fuel if available. Fuel-Injection Pumps -- There are two basic types of fuel injection pumps: in-line and distributor. (In February, I will explain how a distributor pump operates and discuss some troubleshooting hints). Both in-line and distributor pumps may include a separate, built-in transfer pump.
