Renting the augerYou may not have many auger choices at smaller rental stores, but if you go to a larger outlet or a home center that rents power tools, you''ll have to choose between a two- or one-person (see p. 70) power auger head, as well as select the correctly sized auger itself. Auger drills are interchangeable and come in 4-, 6-, 8- or 12-in. diameters. The one to choose depends on the type of posts you''re installing. Remember, the larger the diameter, the tougher it is to handle the machine. If you''re pouring 12-in. footings for a deck, you''ll obviously need the 12-in. auger (Photo 3), but for 4x4 posts, pick up an 8-in. auger. You''ll be able to get away with a 6-in. auger for steel fence posts. Keep in mind that you''ll need a larger hole (and a larger auger) if you''ll be filling around the post with concrete. The 4-in. auger will work for any small post that doesn''t need concrete poured around it. I use the 12-in. auger for all but the smallest posts because the extra space allows me to move the post around for exact placement. * If the smoke generator suddenly shuts down or great clouds of smoke come out the engine head opening, make the flutter valve your first check. Usually the valve has slipped or the nut holding the valve in place is loose. Reposition the valve and tighten the nut and see if that helps. A good PMCS check is to eyeball the grooves in the head that help hold the valve in place. If they''re worn, you probably need a new head. The valve will not stay in place.* A bad band heater will shut down the control panel when you turn on the panel. Then you can''t; smoke. If you suspect that''s the problem, unplug the band heater. That lets you turn on the control panel and smoke. The generator should still start, although it may have more trouble doing so. Then get the band heater fixed as soon as possible. Overall size with motor is 5.7 X 6.1 X 13.3 in. The 6.5-hp Oillube air compressor is ideal for heavy-duty use with most air tools. The compressor has a 60-gal. vertical tank that provides large air storage in little space. Its 2-cylinder pump has cast-iron sleeves and automotive pistons and rings, thus it consumes less oil. An aluminum-finned crankcase and balanced flywheel provide improved heat dissipation. The Model 652A Quantum Plus heat pump is designed for replacement and new construction applications. Using non-ozone depleting Puron refrigerant, this 12-SEER ledmicroscooterwheels heat pump offers dependability, efficiency and flexible installation. A coil guard provides additional protection from rocks and debris. An accumulator ensures that oil-rich refrigerant flows through the compressor to improve compressor lubrication and service life. The compressor features such safeguards as a loss of charge switch and a discharge temperature switch. An air management system, discharge muffler and sound shield help minimize noise. Bryant.
